VESSEL is a monograph exploring the unique body of work by American painter Gary Komarin. Over the last four decades, Komarin has revisited this typology in a diversity of instantiations documented in this monograph. Vessels are a deeply embedded form— an armature— in Komarin’s artistic practice and psyche. Vessels are inherent objects in human civilization, from the ceramics of early Greek and Meso-America to the domestic cups and pitchers of modernity: this distinct form and object is a subject of study which allows Komarin to explore, to freely express, and relish its potentials in curves, patterning, and volumes in abstract iteration.

This Limited First Edition Monograph of the iconic Cake images that Mr. Komarin has been painting since the early 90s, available exclusively from Payton Heller. The Cakes have been exhibited in galleries spanning from New York to Tokyo, and reside in the permanent collections of contemporary art museums worldwide. Mr. Komarin views the Cake as a marriage between the Architectural and the Domestic - Komarin’s father was an Architect who trained in Europe, and his mother a self-taught baker who hailed from Vienna. Komarin shares stories of the lopsided and misshapen cakes produced by his mother, often dripping off the plate, but always delicious and full of love. These domestic scenes became formative iconography in Komarin’s contemporary work.
